    The Domestic Violence Legal Service (DVLS) is a service for victims and survivors or those at risk of domestic and family violence.The DVLS provides the following services: free confidential legal advice on applying for a domestic violence order; and, varying or revoking an existing domestic violence order; legal representation; duty lawyer at the Darwin Magistrate Court; and, referrals to support services and legal services.

    Eligibility Criteria:
    Clients should call to make an appointment for a free advice session either Monday: 9am-12pm Darwin Tuesday: 9:30am-12:30pm Palmerston and Thursday: 9am -12pm Darwin. A duty lawyer will be at court from 9:30am on Wednesday and Fridays. Grants of legal aid funding for representation are available upon approval of a request for aid in accordance with DVLS guidelines.
    Assessment Procedure:
    Calling the Legal Aid Helpline is the first point for all clients. They can then be booked in for a free advice clinic. Appointment in legal advice clinic/duty service.- Solicitor provides advice and if required, client requested to apply for legal aid. Application for legal aid must meet 3 tests: means test (financial), merit test (prospects of success), guidelines and priorities (must be in guidelines).
